The recent announcement of a Takata airbag recall for Acura vehicles will affect many drivers in the Orland Park, Tinley Park, and Naperville areas. The company expanded the recall on January 22nd, which could affect up to 2.23 million U.S. cars outfitted with Takata driver’s side airbags. As automakers calculate the exact models affected by this announcement, total recalls could be up to 5 million vehicles across all automakers. The announcement affects the following Acura models:

  • 2005-2012 Acura RL
  • 2007-2016 Acura RDX (early production MY 2016 vehicles only)
  • 2009-2014 Acura TL
  • 2010-2013 Acura ZDX
  • 2013-2016 Acura ILX (early production MY 2016 vehicles only)

By February 15th, owners can visit the Acura website to search for recalls by VIN number.

Why the Recall?

Takata’s documentation and the National Highway Traffic Safety Association are urging the recall since the driver’s side inflators can deploy with too much force. The amount of force can cause ruptures, which may propel metal fragments into occupants. Eventually, Honda and Acura will install new inflators in cars for free, but the recall is so massive that parts will not be available until the summer. Honda, Acura’s parent brand, will offer loaner cars to concerned drivers in the meantime.

What now?

Drivers who own cars that are affected by the recall should receive an initial recall letter, and then a second notification once parts are available for replacement. The recall also affects a very specific set of vehicles, which is why owners will soon be able to determine recall status through a VIN search. Honda and Acura have received stop-sale orders for affected vehicles that may still be on the lot.
